Survivorship and Sexuality
For most individuals, after the initial cancer diagnosis, their
focus, naturally, is on finding the best available treatment. While
sexual issues are often a concern for many cancer patients, their
spouses and partners during treatment, quite often individuals do
not seek sexual counseling until later on, after treatment, when
the full impact of their experience has been processed. During
this period of self exploration and refection, a common area that
is explored by survivors is how the experience has affected their
sexuality and their sexual identity and how they can again
function, sexually, in a way that brings pleasure, satisfaction and
enjoyment.
Healthy sexuality is an important quality of life issue. The reality is
that for many patients and caregivers, and for many healthcare
professionals, sex and sexuality are harder to discuss than
diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Rothenberg recognizes that
individuals have questions that sometimes have never been
addressed and helps people to discuss topics that are often
difficult to talk about.
